Total is committed to the cutting edge of solar
Today, the world is facing a dual challenge: meeting global energy needs and finding ways to solve climate change by emitting less carbon. At Total, we know we can do both, by diversifying the kinds of energy we use. That’s why we are actively involved in solar photovoltaics through our majority interest in SunPower. SunPower’s solar panels are among the most reliable and efficient in the world, with a record conversion rate of up to 24.1%.
PV Salvador (Chile)
One of the largest commercial solar power stations in the world (70 MW) in the Atacama Desert in Chile. Built and run by SunPower, it boasts high-performance panels.
Solar star, the biggest solar development in the world, built by SunPower for BHE Renewables, a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway Energy (747 MW ac).
California Valley Solar Ranch
Installation of solar panels on the Solar Star development.
SunPower’s solar panels are found on many residential rooftops.
The roof of the Colorado Convention Center. SunPower is the commercial segment leader in the United States.
California Valley Solar Ranch
Developed by SunPower, California Valley Solar Ranch is one of the world’s biggest photovoltaic solar power plants, supplying enough electricity to power 100,000 Californian homes.
California Valley Solar Ranch Motorized systems called trackers point the photovoltaic panels so that they follow the sun’s course, thus increasing energy efficiency by nearly 25% compared to fixed units.
Total and SunPower have built the Prieska photovoltaic solar power plant in South Africa. It will supply the equivalent of 78,000 South African homes in electricity (86 MW).
SunPower Robotic Cleaning Technology: a robotic solar panel cleaning system to maintain optimum performance
A Major Player in Solar Energy
With SunPower®, Total is fully committed to solar: we are a major photovoltaic solar company. Our teams — experts in the field — are proficient in every area of photovoltaics:
- R&D in high-efficiency solar technology.
- Manufacturing solar cells and assembling them into panels (or modules).
- Creating systems for homes and businesses.
- Designing turnkey power plants like the Solar Star Projects in California, the world’s biggest central solar photovoltaic development.
High-Quality, High-Performance Products
A company that has embodied excellence and boldness for more than 30 years and has filed more than 600 patents, SunPower® banks on innovation. Today, its teams are making solar panels that convert 24.1% of solar energy to power, compared with around 17% for a standard solar technology product. What’s more, SunPower has developed a robotic solar panel cleaning system to maintain optimum performance. This system is quicker and more efficient than traditional methods: it uses 75%1 less water and operates at night to maintain total panel efficiency during the day. Finally, SunPower® has some of the most reliable products in the market: the power level of its solar cells is almost unchanged after 25 years.
As a result, SunPower® panel users produce more electricity and emit 40% less greenhouse gas than standard2 panel users., which have earned SunPower® panels the Total Ecosolutions3 label and a Cradle to Cradle™4 Silver certification for all panels, illustrating SunPower’s high level of environmental excellence. SunPower’s Cradle to Cradle Silver panels have also been named Environmental Leader Product of the Year 20165.
